Description |
Titled The Penland Scene and Roads to Penland, these maps of the Penland School of Handicrafts (now the Penland School of Crafts) campus and the surrounding area are two of a number of maps that have been printed over the years. They have served to promote the school, orient visitors, students and instructors, and to entertain the reader. With the passage of time they have become valuable documents that help to date the placement and construction of buildings, the changing topography of the land; as well as providing cultural information about the greater Penland community. This particular map was used as the inside front and back cover pages for the 1944 catalog listing the summer classes being taught at Penland. The campus map on the left is signed "Toni" in the lower right hand corner and refers to Howard C. "Toni" Ford. |
